Interview with NET patient Josh Mailman together with his wife Juliette and their son Eli

In this interview, Josh and his family gave us insights into his cancer diagnosis, his treatment with radiotheranostics by Prof. Richard Baum, and his new life as an internationally recognized patient advocate.

Josh Mailman's life was forever changed by his diagnosis in 2007. As an athletic man of 46 years who biked 100 km a week and showed no signs of illness, the tech entrepreneur went in for his routine annual check-up. Following a thorough examination, he received unexpected news: he had a tumor the size of a tennis ball in his pancreas, with metastases in his liver. Surgery was deemed too risky. At the time, his son was just two months old. His wife, Juliette, began researching online and discovered that, with such a diagnosis, the typical prognosis was often only about a year. One can only imagine the emotional tribute to their young family. Today, however, their son is 17 years old.

Josh's journey as a patient began with attending conferences to learn more about possible treatments. At the annual meeting of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMM) he met Professor Richard P. Baum, who currently practices at the Curanosticum in Wiesbaden, Germany and is a board of trustee of the ICPO Foundation as well as the president of the ICPO Academy for Theranostics. Over the past 14 years, Professor Baum has treated Josh with radiotheranostics therapy multiple times. Fortunately, Josh responded very well to the treatment and became what is known as a "super responder."

Today, Josh is an internationally recognized advocate for patients with neuroendocrine tumors and a strong advocate of integrative oncology, nuclear medicine, and molecular imaging. He works for many agencies and foundations in the US and across the word. For example, he serves as the inaugural chairman of the Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging's (SNMMI) Patient Advocacy Advisory Board, is a board member of the Education and Research Foundation for Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (ERF) and is the President of NorCal CarciNET Community. Josh holds an MBA from UCLA's Anderson School of Management and has been a technology entrepreneur for over 20 years.

Susanne Simon, Head of Communications and Community of the ICPO Foundation, was honored to welcome Josh, his wife Juliette, and their son Eli to the ICPO Foundation in Wiesbaden for a detailed interview about Josh's patient journey. The interview also touched on Juliette and Eli's emotional experiences during this challenging time.
